Thousands of basketball fans to visit Greenville
Twice in March, Greenville will welcome thousands of visitors as the city hosts the 2017 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament March 1-5 and first and second round games of the 2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament March 17-19. While basketball is bringing visitors to town, there will be plenty of opportunities to explore for those who don’t care about catching every moment of play at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The two tournament weekends present an opportunity for Greenville to show off the best in food, drinks, fun and culture.
Roof with a View: Avenue, new downtown rooftop event space, to open in April
Hughes Commercial Properties and local restaurateur Rick Erwin have partnered to open Avenue, a new indoor-outdoor event space with panoramic views of the city on the rooftop of 110 E. Court St., in April. The 7,200-square-foot venue was designed by Atlanta architect Keith Summerour to accommodate a wide range of events from small corporate meetings to sit-down dinners for 200 guests to wedding receptions for 400 guests.
Terrace brings ‘Southern favorites with a twist’ to the West End
The local brunch game is getting even stronger. Stewart Penick’s Terrace restaurant, recognized in the Charlotte area for its red velvet waffles, shrimp ‘n’ grits and ceiling-height metal wire tree sculptures, will open its first Greenville location at 654 S. Main St., next to Rick Erwin’s West End Grille, by the end of March, as long as progress continues at the expected pace. Known in Charlotte as a breakfast and lunch spot, Terrace’s Greenville restaurant is designed to be a dinner destination as well.
Spartanburg restaurateurs will open new eatery in downtown
William Cribb’s restaurant portfolio has expanded during the past few years. But the Spartanburg chef always smiles when he thinks about where his food journey began — a 30-seat eatery he opened in 2010 at 121 N. Spring St. in downtown. With the help of his business partner Raj Patel, Cribb is going back to his roots with a new venture The Kennedy that is expected to open this summer in the 2,200-square-foot restaurant building at 221 E. Kennedy St. that formerly housed Renato’s.
Bassmaster Classic returning to Upstate in 2018
The world championship for bass fishing will make its return to the Upstate in 2018. Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S., announced the 2018 Bassmaster Classic would be hosted by a joint effort between Anderson and Greenville counties. The actual fishing tournament will be held on Lake Hartwell while the daily weigh-ins will be at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena and the annual Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo will be hosted at the TD Convention Center. Akin said choosing the Upstate was an easy decision given the success of the 2015 Bassmaster Classic that drew over 100,000 visitors, vendors and competitors to the event in the Upstate.
