MoviePass: An Honest Review

*Update – Since this post was first shared, MoviePass has updated their price to $15.99 a month. Read below to see if the subscription service is still worth considering.

How does seeing unlimited movies in theatres for $9.99 a month sound?moviepass

YES PLEASE. With a deal like that, it’s no wonder the new movie subscription phenomenon has over 3 million subscribers. MoviePass has quickly swept the nation as the new way to see movies.

When I heard the buzz of MoviePass through friends and social media, I jumped on board immediately. As an avid movie goer, I was thrilled by the idea of saving money while seeing more movies. Admittedly, from the beginning, the whole concept has seemed suspiciously too good to be true. With several months of MoviePass ownership and about a dozen movies under my belt, I am writing an honest review.

My first time using MoviePass was a dream experience. I checked in to the movie I was seeing (A Quiet Place) on my MoviePass app when I arrived at Camelot Cinemas in Greenville, then handed the cashier at the ticket booth my MoviePass card and strolled in. I was so pleased by how simple the process was, I decided to treat myself to some popcorn (since the movie was free-ish right?).

To be honest, I’ve bought popcorn almost every time I’ve gone to see a movie with my pass. I’ve even gone to the theatre a time or two by myself – a nice experience if you’re in need of an introvert moment.

Typically, though, I attend with other MoviePass member friends. We even have a group text named “MoviePass Peeps” – the basis of the conversation, of course, being who is going to see what movies this week. You can imagine our distress when someone went to check into the app and it informed them that because the movie was in popular demand, they needed to pay extra.

Maybe it was too good to be true…With the new up-charge for “high demand” movies, the sweetness of the deal is wearing off. Not to mention, there has been an uproar of complaints about customer service, and countless articles detailing why the MoviePass business model is one that industry experts claim won’t last. In a recent article, CNN reported that MoviePass ran out of money to buy users tickets one-day last week but chalked the error messages on the app up to “technical difficulties.” Yikes.

*Now that MoviePass has announced the increased monthly fee and limited access to popular blockbusters, you can find me creating a pros and cons list of MoviePass compared to other subscription services.

Whether I decide to keep my subscription or not is to be determined. Either way, I’m thankful for the fun MoviePass has added to my life for the past few months. If you already enjoy going to the movies or you want to be that person at the dinner party who has an opinion on all of the box office films, you should consider the subscription. Your boring weeknights just got better. Whether MoviePass will continue to be “the new way to see movies,” I’m not so sure. For now, I’ll still be searching for the most cost-effective ways to see movies – I might skip the popcorn next time, though.
