The press praises Greenville … again
Little ol’ Greenville has racked up quite the recognition over the last week. It started with the Wall Street Journal‘s naming it in the top 10 “buzzy, newly accessible destinations” along with some pretty impressive international locations. And “Southern Living” lauded it as a “foodie paradise.” Now the Tennessean has called it “a great choice for a long weekend trip, especially in the fall.”
CEOs for Cities coming to Greenville, featuring Atlantic writer James Fallows
More than 250 civic leaders from around the country are expected to visit Greenville in May for a personal inspection of some of its achievements and to share ideas about urban renewal. A well-known journalist and author who has written about Greenville with admiration — James Fallows of The Atlantic — is also scheduled to take part, according to Greenville Mayor Knox White. White said Greenville is the smallest city to host a meeting of CEOs for Cities.
Construction on new federal courthouse to begin in 2018
Construction of the long awaited new federal courthouse in downtown Greenville is expected to begin in 2018. The project, which received initial funding all the way back in 2004, will take three years to complete, according to information given to the Greenville City Council Monday during a discussion about the city’s state and federal legislative agenda.
Upstate gas prices soar after pipeline explosion
The spike in gas prices was triggered by an explosion Monday afternoon in a remote section of the Colonial pipeline near Helena, Alabama. One person was killed and five others were injured when a piece of dirt-moving equipment called a track hoe struck the pipeline, igniting a fire that was still burning Tuesday. It is unclear how high gas prices will climb. Much will depend on how soon the Colonial gasoline pipeline returns to service.
Ice on Main returns to Greenville and Ice rink preparations are underway in downtown Spartanburg
United Community Bank Ice on Main in Greenville will kick off its season Nov. 18, and will remain open daily through Jan. 16. Crews are also busy preparing Morgan Square for the fifth season of Skating on the Square in downtown Spartanburg, scheduled to open Friday, Nov. 18 and remain open through Jan. 18.
