Q: How long have you been painting?
Really just since college, maybe 35 years now.
Q: What got you interested in art?
I’ve been interested in art and art making for as long as I can remember. There were better arts education in the schools when I was growing up. There were opportunities to make art integrated into the curriculum of other subjects.
Q: How would you describe your style of art?
Well, my oil painting is in the realist tradition, especially that of Antonio Lopez Garcia. My assemblage work is influenced by artists like Kurt Schwitters, George Herms and Robert Rauschenberg.
Q: What was one of the first things you painted? What makes it memorable?
One of my first paintings was a still life composition studio piece in a painting class. It’s really good, but unfinished. It’s hidden away in my studio somewhere. I like it because so much of it came to me as effortless work.
Q: Where do you gather most of the inspiration for your works?
By looking, which is too simplistic an answer; maybe “seeing” is a better word. Something catches my attention, and I am drawn to it. I start to envision it as a painting. In Gospel Essentials that triangle of light on the building is really the center point of the composition. Everything kind of revolves around that. It was my inspiration. I’m fascinated by light and color.
Q: What, in your opinion, is the hardest step in creating a masterpiece?
I’ll let you know when I make one.
Q: What’s your favorite piece?
I don’t play favorites with my children or my art. They are all so very different from one another. Fertile Ground came together nicely. There’s something about Eclipse on Paris Mountain… that I’d like to explore more in future work. Sans Souci: across Poinsett Highway… is the first in a new series titled Grounded Air. I’m excited about that.
