22 Dec Home Tip Of The Week: Preparing For Houseguests
Are you opening your home to houseguests this holiday season? We’ve put together a handy checklist to make sure you have everything ready.
1. Stock the bathroom
Make sure there are clean towels, plenty of toilet paper, and hand soap as well as shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the shower. Put together a basket of extra toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, and razors in case your guests forgot to bring them.
2. Stock the bedroom
If possible, provide soft and firm pillows so your guests can choose whichever they prefer. Add blanket options with heavier and lighter weights to layer on the bed for warmth. Make sure there is room in the closet and dresser if they plan on unpacking their things. Set out books and magazines they may be interested in reading during free time.
3. Stock the kitchen
Let your guests know what to expect in the morning (i.e “We have breakfast at 8”). Have a variety of beverages and breakfast foods on hand including juice, coffee, tea, milk, fruit, granola, muffins, and cereal. Be sure to have drink additions like creamer, sugar, and honey. For daytime drinks, provide sodas and bottles of water. For the evening, stock up on several moderately priced bottles of red and white wine. Finally, have plenty of snacks including both sweet and salty varieties.
4. Write down important information
Make the wifi password handy upon their arrival. Write down instructions for the remote control, thermostat, and anything else that could be tricky to operate. If they aren’t familiar with the area, provide a map and a list of possible activities and restaurants. Make a list of emergency numbers in case something happens (i.e. friendly neighbors, plumber, etc).
5. Make a spare key
Many guests appreciate having a spare key so they can come and go as they please.
6. Conveniently arrange furniture
Make sure there is enough seating in the main areas of the house for everyone. Position couches and chairs so they are facing each other for conversation. Anticipate the need to set down drinks by providing enough side tables and coasters near the seating.
