Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg visits Governor’s School in Greenville
Facebook entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg on Sunday paid a surprise visit to the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville. The billionaire social media guru spent about two hours at the school, enjoying a dance performance, taking a tour of the campus and chatting with a roundtable of students about their dreams for the future. In January, Zuckerberg pledged to journey to all 50 states in 2017 to “talk to more people about how they’re living, working and thinking about the future,” according to news sources.
Understated Elegance – Stella’s Southern Brasserie set to open March 28
Chef and co-owner Jason Sholz describes his new restaurant, Stella’s Southern Brasserie, as a little black dress — it’s versatile. Stella’s Brasserie, Parkside Provisions, and Café, which is the full name, is part coffee shop, breakfast spot, lunch café with a retail component featuring grab-and-go prepared foods, and French-influenced dinner destination with an ever-changing menu and beverage selections.
Stone Pin bowling alley almost ready to rumble
The long-rumored boutique bowling alley under the former Handlebar at 304 E. Stone Ave. in Greenville is finally about a month and a half away from opening. Stone Pin Company, in the basement of the event space renamed Revel, is on the home stretch with a May 1 projected opening date after a project with the original Charleston-based bowling alley, The Alley, didn’t pan out last year.
New trolley routes should start this summer
Beginning this summer, residents in the Alta Vista, West Greenville, Southernside, and Hampton-Pinckney neighborhoods will be able to jump on a trolley to get around downtown and visit some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Two new trolleys will serve the growing art and restaurant district in the Village of West Greenville, in addition to Cleveland Park and the Greenville Zoo.
Abbott’s Frozen Custard headed for downtown Spartanburg
Growing up in Rochester, N.Y., Mark Khoury was never far away from his favorite dessert shop, Abbott’s Frozen Custard. But when he came to the Upstate a few years ago, he found it difficult to find anything that tapped into his sense of nostalgia and satisfied his cravings. On Jan. 8, 2015, Khoury opened his first franchise and the first South Carolina store for the Rochester-based chain at 119 E. Poinsett St. in downtown Greer. Khoury said Tuesday he has found a location for his and the state’s second store in downtown Spartanburg.
