City Council OKs $100K for Children’s Museum of the Upstate City leaders gave their blessing — and financial support — to a plan to bring a children’s museum to downtown Spartanburg on Monday night. The Greenville-based Children’s Museum of the Upstate is looking to open a 6,000-square-foot satellite facility at 130 Magnolia St. in Spartanburg to aid families with school readiness and kindergarten preparedness.
Three outdoor concert series kick off in May
Outdoor music is blossoming all over the place this spring; three more weekly series get under way in May around the Upstate. First up is Mauldin’s Railroad Concert Series, which kicks off May 5 at the Mauldin Cultural Center Amphitheater. This series gets under way at 7 p.m. each Friday during May, and admission is free. The Secret Sisters play the opening concert.
Wild Wing Cafe opens second Greenville location
Wild Wing Cafè recently opened its second location in Greenville. The chain announced the opening last week at 1025 Woodruff Road, next to Regal Hollywood Stadium 20 in the Magnolia Park Shopping Center. The store is currently hiring. Like other stores, Wild Wing Cafè will offer its usual fan favorites, in addition a variety of wing sauces from seasoned, to sweet, bold, barbecue and spicy.
Roper Mountain Road improvement on Transportation Committee agenda
The Greenville Legislative Delegation Transportation Committee will meet to discuss intersection improvements for Roper Mountain Road and Highway 14. Committee Chairman Paul Hughes said traffic backup can be constant at the intersection of Roper Mountain Road and Highway 14, which is surrounded by residences and subdivisions.
New catering concept showcases a whole new side of Henry’s Smokehouse.
Foie gras torchon, seared quail with polenta, and beef two ways with a three-potato hash, garlic emulsion, and red wine reduction aren’t exactly
the dishes that come to mind when Henry’s Smokehouse is mentioned. At least, not until now. Henry’s owner Tiger O’Rourke, along with chefs Bo Wilder and Nicky Bolton, are launching a fine-dining, farm-to-table catering business called Pure Culinary Creations based on Wilder and Bolton’s backgrounds at Devereaux’s, which closed in 2013.
Study: Students in reading program didn’t experience summer reading loss
Seventy-eight percent of third- through fifth-grade students who participated in Public Education Partners’ Make Summer Count reading program maintained or increased their reading levels during summer break in 2016. Through Make Summer Count, Public Education Partners and Scholastic allowed 18,000 students at the 29 participating Greenville County elementary schools to select 11 books for their home libraries.
