Charlotte’s brunch-centric Terrace Café eyes Greenville
The Queen City’s Terrace Café is set to open their doors around the end of this year. Founder and CEO of the restaurant Stewart Penick plans to open three restaurants a year in the Carolinas for the next several years, starting in Greenville with a 6,200-square-foot space at 654 S. Main St. next to Rick Irwin’s West End Grille by the end of the year.
Coming to Greenville: German grocer Lidl
Lidl is planning at least two stores in Greenville as it invades the U.S. market from Europe. Lidl plans stores on Woodruff Road and on Wade Hampton Boulevard in front of Wade Hampton High School. Both would have about 36,000 square feet of space and be near groceries operated by Aldi, another German chain that competes with Lidl.
Growler Haus plans new location in Village of West Greenville
Upstate-based craft beer venture Growler Haus plans to open a new location in the Village of West Greenville. Craig Kinley, who founded the concept in 2012 after spending two decades in the telecom industry, said he has signed an agreement for 2,400 square feet of indoor space and an 800-square-foot beer garden at 12 Lois Ave. Kinley has targeted the first quarter of 2017 for the location’s opening. It will be his company’s fourth addition to existing sites in Anderson, Fountain Inn, and downtown Spartanburg.
County Square redevelopment moving forward, affordable housing unlikely
The land under County Square could be worth $2 million an acre — “so valuable” that it would “likely not be conducive to affordable housing,” said County Administrator Joe Kernell in a meeting of the County Square Development Ad Hoc Committee on Thursday. This committee is dedicated to evaluating future development options of County Square and its 32-acre parcel of land, nestled on University Ridge in Greenville’s West End. Land prices are ballooning as new apartment complexes and multi-use developments pop up and the amount of undeveloped land diminishes.
DC-3 ‘vintage hot dog joint’ coming to GSP
Hungry travelers at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport will soon have hot dogs added to the menu of options. DC-3, a Washington, D.C.-based self-described “vintage hot dog joint,” will open in the airport terminal’s Grand Hall between concourses A and B when upgrades are finished sometime this fall. Other restaurants coming to the terminal this fall are Baskin-Robbins, Chick-fil-A and The Kitchen, a new dining concept by renowned chef Wolfgang Puck.
Le Spice Restaurant and Bakery opens on Spartanburg’s west side
At about 3 a.m., Nick Dhers walks into the kitchen of his new restaurant, ready to make bread. Nick and his wife, Ae — pronounced like the “a” in “ace” — are co-owners of Le Spice Restaurant and Bakery, now open on Spartanburg’s west side. The eatery, located in the former Converse Deli West building, offers a mixture of Southern, French and Thai flavors. Everything from the bread to the mayonnaise is homemade by Nick and Ae. The couple said they share a passion for cooking and for bringing healthier, less-processed options to the area.
