Upstate Headlines: Greenville Named Underrated Foodie Town, Spartanburg’s New School and More

Another month, another list… or at least that’s what it seems like sometimes here in Greenville, which over the past few years has received big ups from the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Southern Living, The Tennessean, and others. Now, BuzzFeed is singing the former Pleasantburg’s praises, placing our beloved Upstate town on their list of 12 Underrated Food Cities in America.

Nicole Sophabmixay and her nephew, Benny Chen, expect to open Pokenori, a restaurant serving poke — a blend of Hawaiian cuisine with sushi — in the 2,700-square-foot space at 119 N. Church St. next to Growler Haus, in the coming weeks. Pokenori’s menu features eight signature dishes for $8.95. The eatery will occupy space in the historic Palmetto Building across from Morgan Square.

Spartanburg School District 2 trustees and students broke ground on the new Boiling Springs High School Tuesday evening. In November, voters approved letting the district borrow $120 million to pay for the new school, renovations to the current high school building to use as the Ninth Grade Campus, and improvements to athletic facilities.The new high school is set to open in 2019. Freshman are set to move into the renovated high school building the year after.

The 2017 solar eclipse is still more than two months away, but that two minutes of total darkness is already causing a stir. Greenville is directly in the path of the eclipse, and it will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental United States since 1979, and another one of this magnitude won’t come along until 2078. Roper Mountain Science Center is planning an Eclipse Extravaganza, and about half of the 2,500 tickets have already been sold.

New-Tropical-Smoothie-Cafe-PelhamUpstate’s third Tropical Smoothie Café to open on Pelham Road in Greenville
A third Tropical Smoothie Café in the Upstate will open early this fall at 3701 Pelham Road next to Moe’s Southwest Grill in the former Sprint store. This is the second of six franchise locations two former executives for Spartanburg-based Denny’s Corp. plan to open in the Upstate. The restaurant chain, whose motto is “Eat Better. Feel Better,” is considered a healthier alternative to fast food. Menu items from smoothies to flatbreads to wraps can be customized for particular dietary needs, such as vegan and gluten-free.
