Easter is April 16, and families looking for egg hunts have plenty of options. Once again, we’ve compiled an extensive list of the Easter egg hunts and family-themed events happening in the Upstate. While we’ve verified all of the information below, check with the event’s website or host prior to attending, since some events do get postponed and cancelled. Happy hunting!
Cleveland Park master plan on the horizon
A lot has changed since William Choice Cleveland donated a crescent-shaped, 110-acre plot of land to the city in 1924, a move that led to the creation of Cleveland Park. Initially, the park, much of it along the Reedy River, originally had a Girl Scout meeting place and a nine-hole golf course. In 1960, the Greenville Zoo opened. Now, the Swamp Rabbit Trail is a major drawing card. Today, Cleveland Park is being hurt by its own popularity. Enter Greenville City Council, which has set aside $165,000 to craft a master plan for the park in its proposed 2017-18 capital improvement plan budget. The budget is expected to be approved in May.
New event venue, the Rutherford, to open this summer
Just one month after giving birth to her first child, Yasha Patel was signing a mortgage in early December for a complete gut job of a 1950s-era property. Upon completion, the location will be transformed into a 10,000-square-foot event space situated between North Main Street and Poinsett Highway on Rutherford Road. Originally a motor freight company and most recently Gypsy G’s Roadhouse, the building at 520 Rutherford Road sat vacant for about three years before Patel snatched it up to become the Rutherford. If all goes according to plan, it will open June 1.
Bohemian-style lager brewery headed for Spartanburg
A new brewery is planned near Spartanburg’s western gateway to downtown. Spartanburg Brewing LLC, a venture founded by four friends — Petr Valenta, David Wenstrup, Tim Meade, and Pradip Bahukudumbi — will open this summer in a 4,000-square-foot building at 101 Chester St. The brewery will feature five Bohemian-style lagers, some food, comfortable indoor lounge space, and ample outdoor space for a range of activities, including a beer garden, beach volleyball, and live music.
The curious reason Greenville Schools will start late this year
Greenville County Schools will start its 2017-18 school year on Tues., Aug. 22, the day after the total solar eclipse, Mon., Aug. 21. South Carolina is one of the 12 states in the country that will experience a total eclipse of the sun. Recently, lawmakers voted to allow schools to start Thurs., Aug. 17, earlier than normal. Some districts have chosen to do that and cancel classes on the day of the eclipse. Greenville County Schools elected not to start early.
