26 Mar Take Me Out to the Ball Game!
There are few things more American than sitting outside, enjoying a hot dog, and watching a game of baseball. In the Upstate, that means heading to Fluor Field in the West End of downtown Greenville to cheer on the Greenville Drive, a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
Before you hit the ground running, know your bases. Here’s a little history on our team. In 2005, the Columbia Bombers moved to Greenville and changed their name to the Drive, a nod to BMW, Michelin, and Greenville’s rich automotive history. First, the Drive played ball at Greenville Municipal Stadium before heading to Fluor Field at the West End when it opened in 2006. Nicknamed “Little Fenway,” the stadium not only replicates the dimensions of Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox), but we have our own “Green Monster” manual scoreboard as well as “Pesky’s Pole” in the right field. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the words to “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, as you’ll be expected to sing along in the middle of the eighth inning, just like at Fenway.
