Step Into the Artist’s Studio

Step Into the Artist’s Studio

Before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season begins, take some time out to enjoy Greenville Open Studios. Whether you’re looking for a new piece for your home, picking up a holiday gift for a loved one, or just familiarizing yourself with the great talent in our area, Open Studios is fun for all.

Each November, studios of local artists across the Upstate open to the public. Giving artists an opportunity to market their work and giving the community an opportunity to learn about the artistic process, Greenville Open Studios is an annual event now in its 17th year. With 143 participating artists within a 15-mile radius of downtown Greenville, make sure to clear your calendar from November 9-11 so you have a chance to visit as many artists as you desire. According to the Metropolitan Arts Council, “This event truly opens up the world of visual artists to everyone – from the seasoned collector to the first-time art buyer to the curious general public.”

There are two great ways to plan your weekend route:

1. Pick up the 2018 Open Studios catalogue from any of the artists’ studios, at MAC, or at various retail locations around town.

2. Download the app to search artists by hours, medium, and wheelchair accessibility. You can plan your self-guided tour by creating a map of your favorites and then travel to the studios via Google Maps.

We are proud to sponsor Open Studios and hope you enjoy it! Booked that weekend? Don’t worry, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy local art in the Upstate. Here are a few other events to explore this fall.

First Fridays: Also put on by MAC, on the first Friday of every month you can explore participating galleries from 6-9 pm. Check the Facebook page for specific gallery highlights each month.

Second Sundays: A program by the Chapman Cultural Center, Second Sundays is a free community event featuring a theme, music, local artists selling handmade goods, food and beverage vendors, and a community organization providing an activity. During the event, attendees are welcome to peruse the Chapman Cultural Center as part of their experience, including the Youth Gallery, sponsored by Coldwell Banker Caine.

Spartanburg Artwalk: Did you know Spartanburg’s downtown has been named a cultural district? On the third Thursday of each month, galleries and museums stay open late (5-9 pm) to allow guests to enjoy various exhibitions and art-related activities + cocktails and hor d’oeuvres! Get the Spartanburg cultural experience at Artwalk.
